The correctional system in Oregon is a multi-layered structure that includes state-run prisons, federal correctional institutions, county jails, and city detention centers. This system is designed to protect the public, rehabilitate offenders, and ensure the administration of justice. The Oregon Department of Corrections is the primary agency responsible for managing the state's prison system.
State prisons are high-security facilities meant for offenders who are serving long-term sentences, typically for felony convictions. As of 2021, there are 14 state prisons under the administration of the Oregon Department of Corrections:
Federal Prisons are operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice. In Oregon, there is one federal prison:
Oregon has 36 counties, each with its own jail facility. These facilities typically hold individuals who are awaiting trial or serving shorter sentences for misdemeanors. They are under the jurisdiction of the county sheriff's department. Some of the larger county jails include the Multnomah County Jail and the Lane County Jail.
City jails are usually smaller, temporary holding facilities where individuals are often held for short periods following arrest, before transfer to county jail or release, or to serve very short sentences. Not every city in Oregon has its own jail; instead, many use the county jail. The City of Portland, for example, uses Multnomah County Detention Center for its needs.
Each level of the correctional system in Oregon has its own resources for inmate search. Depending on where the person is being held (state prison, federal prison, county jail, city jail), you can use the following resources:
The Oregon Department of Corrections maintains an online offender search system that can be used to locate individuals serving sentences in state prisons. You will need either the offender's full name or their state identification (SID) number.
For individuals serving sentences in federal prisons, you can use the Federal Bureau of Prisons' inmate locator. You will need the inmate's Bureau of Prisons (BOP) register number, DCDC number, FBI number or INS number.
Each county in Oregon has its own system for inmate lookup. For instance, Multnomah County Sheriff's Office provides an online inmate search. Lane County also provides an online inmate information search. Other counties might require a phone call or in-person visit for information.
For city jails, information is usually best obtained by contacting the relevant city's police department or city jail directly. Keep in mind, many individuals held in city jails are quickly transferred to county facilities, so checking the county inmate rosters can also be helpful.
