Oklahoma has a complex network of correctional facilities and systems that include state prisons, private prisons, federal prisons, county jails, and city jails. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) oversees the state prisons and is responsible for maintaining inmate records, the supervision of released prisoners, parole processing, and offering programs aimed at reducing reoffending.
State prisons house offenders who have been convicted of state-level crimes. They are under the direct supervision of the ODOC. The following is a list of some state prisons in Oklahoma:
Private prisons in Oklahoma are managed by private corporations contracted by the state. Currently, Oklahoma contracts three private prisons:
Federal Prisons are reserved for individuals convicted of federal crimes. As of my last update in September 2021, Oklahoma had one federal prison - the Federal Transfer Center (FTC) in Oklahoma City.
County jails in Oklahoma are run by the county's Sheriff's Department. They typically house individuals awaiting trial, serving short sentences, or waiting for transfer to a state prison. Each of the 77 counties in Oklahoma operates its own jail.
City jails are operated by individual city police departments and often hold individuals who have been arrested for minor offenses or are awaiting trial. City jails are designed for short-term incarceration, typically less than one year.
Various online and offline methods are available to locate inmates in the Oklahoma correctional system. The most effective way to conduct an inmate search depends on the type of facility where the individual is being held.
