The Missouri Department of Corrections (MODOC) is responsible for the operation and administration of correctional facilities throughout the state. It is structured to facilitate the incarceration of offenders, their rehabilitation, and eventual reintegration into society. The MODOC is responsible for maintaining state-run prisons, supervising offenders on probation or parole, and providing services for rehabilitation and treatment.
MODOC's mission, according to their official website, is "Improving Lives for Safer Communities". Their efforts include ensuring public safety, enhancing offender reentry and rehabilitation, fostering restorative justice, and promoting collaborative partnerships.
In Missouri, correctional facilities are generally categorized as:
These are run by MODOC, housing inmates who've committed state crimes. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Missouri has 21 state prisons, including both men's and women's facilities, each serving a different segment of the offender population.
County jails are administered at the county level and typically hold inmates serving short sentences or awaiting trial. They also hold inmates awaiting transfer to a state or federal prison. There are more than 100 county jails in Missouri, including facilities in large counties such as Jackson County and St. Louis County.
City jails are operated by individual municipalities and generally hold inmates for short periods, usually those awaiting arraignment or serving minor sentences. They're located throughout the state, in both large cities like Kansas City and St. Louis and smaller ones.
Federal prisons house inmates convicted of federal offenses. There are two federal correctional institutions in Missouri: one in Springfield (Medical Center for Federal Prisoners) and one in Leavenworth (USP Leavenworth).
If the online search tools do not yield the necessary information, you can try reaching out to the correctional facilities directly:
Remember, when reaching out directly to any correctional institution, always be polite, patient, and prepared with the inmate's full name and any other relevant information that could assist in the search.
